To mark the return of Milan’s Salone del Mobile and related Design Week this fall, Dior has commissioned more than a dozen artists and designers to put their spin on the medallion chair, a symbol of the French fashion house since its inception in 1947.
The first instalment of Atang Tshikare’s “Peo e Atang” was recently on show in Cape Town. We spoke to Atang about the inspiration behind the three-part project, and his journey as an artist, designer and creator.

Hailing from Bloemfontein, Atang Tshikare is a Cape Town-based self-taught multidisciplinary artist. His father who was an anti-Apartheid activist and illustrator for art and Pan-African magazines was the propellant to his art career, spanning over two decades long.
INTERVIEW: The first instalment of the Peo e Atang exhibition closed on 19 May 2021. It’s the first part of the trilogy that comprises artworks, a short novel, music and animation that we’re going to exhibit over the next three years.
Atang Tshikare is a Bophuthatswana-raised, multidisciplinary artist currently based in Cape Town. Under his company Zabalazaa Design, Atang has collaborated with brands from MTV Base and Puma to Adidas and BMW. His collectible works have evolved into sculptural furniture and functional art; zoomorphic creatures crafted in a wide range of materials.
In South Africa, craft may be ancient, but design is young. With the launch in 2017 of the world-class Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa designed by British architect Thomas Heatherwick in Cape Town’s historic grain silo on the waterfront – which was the biggest public art space to open on the continent for more than a century – along with the beach city’s thriving design and gallery scene and annual art fair, South Africa is finally attracting global attention in terms of culture. South African design, in disciplines spanning from furniture to ceramics, is one of the most exciting sectors for new collectors.
In celebration of the gallery’s 10-year anniversary, BMW and Southern Guild invited a master South African artist to create an iconic look for the all-new BMW X4. Atang Tshikare took seven days to sketch a completely unique masterpiece on one of our most unique vehicles.
